Conjunctivitis: pink eye, discharge, and when it is more serious

Conjunctivitis often causes a red, gritty eye with discharge. Most simple cases settle, but pain, light sensitivity, reduced vision, or contact-lens use can point to a more serious eye problem.

When to get urgent help

  • Reduced vision, significant pain, or marked light sensitivity
  • A red eye in a contact-lens wearer
  • Severe swelling, corneal changes, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening

What to expect

  • Viral conjunctivitis is common and often spreads easily through households.
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis may cause sticky discharge, especially on waking.
  • Serious eye pain or blurred vision needs urgent assessment because it may not be simple conjunctivitis.

Simple self-care and follow-up points

  • Wash hands frequently and avoid sharing towels or eye products.
  • Avoid contact lenses until the eye is fully recovered and you have been advised it is safe.
  • Seek review if symptoms persist or vision changes.
